The Byzantine Empire

Location
     Constantinople, today is Istanbul, Turkey.


Political Characteristics

   Constantinople was founded by Rome’s first Christian emperor, Constantine. The first years were very difficult. Until the reign of Justinian I, which began in 527, saw a period of extensive Imperial conquests of former Roman territories. Justinian updated the ancient Roman legal code into the Corpus luris Civilis


Economic Characteristics

     Byzantium was one of the most important western terminals of the Silk Route.


Social Characteristics

      There was controversy and religious division over iconoclasm


Cultural Characteristics

      By far the most significant building of the Byzantine Empire is the great church of Haig Sophia in Constantinople. Byzantium played an important role in the transmission of classical knowledge to the Islamic world and to Renaissance Italy.
